Setting Up a Custom Domain

Your domain name is the address your users will type to reach your site. If you would like to read a bit more about how a domain name works and what aspects make up a domain name you can read more about it in this fantastic article.

In this article, we'll cover steps to use your own custom domain, or a custom subdomain.

By default SocialEngine cloud sites are set up on a subdomain of SocialEngine.com. If you look up into the address bar you will see your URL appear as YOURURL.onsocialengine.com.

How to set up SocialEngineCloud on your own custom domain

If you would rather have a custom domain name, follow these steps:

  1. If you have not already registered your own domain you can start by registering your custom domain with a company such as Register.com, Godaddy.com, or 1and1.com
  2. Log in to your domain registrar's control panel, or your DNS provider to modify where your domain points. This may look a bit different depending on which domain registrar you chose. You may need to consult your registrar’s support staff to learn how to do the following.
  3. Create a new CNAME record named www, and point it to YOURURL.onsocialengine.com.
  4. Point your domain apex (like yoururl.com. Make sure to exclude the www) to 54.183.234.235 or optionally 54.67.86.147 using an A Record.
  5. Test to make sure that your domain is correctly pointing to SocialEngine’s servers by entering your custom domain name into your address bar. This should direct you to a page that looks like the page below.

Note: this step might take up to 24 hours before being fully functional, this is a normal DNS propagation time window.
  6. Log into your site’s admin panel (at YOURURL.onsocialengine.com) and click the Site Info tab on the left hand side.
  7. Once in the Site Info Section, enter your domain name in the Custom Domain field.

Setting up SocialEngine cloud on a Subdomain

If you already have a website and you are looking to integrate your community site on a subdomain (something like social.yoururl.com) please follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your domain registrar's control panel, or your DNS provider to modify where your domain points. This may look a bit different depending on which domain registrar you chose. You may need to consult your registrar’s support staff to learn how to do the following.
  2. In your domain registrar's control panel, create a new CNAME record with the name social, and point it to YOURURL.onsocialengine.com.
  3. Test to make sure that your domain is correctly pointing to SocialEngine’s servers by entering your custom domain name into your address bar. This should direct you to a page that looks like the page below.

Note: this step might take up to 24 hours before being fully functional, this is a normal DNS propagation time window.
  4. Head to your admin panel’s Site Info Section (found at YOURURL.onsocialengine.com/admin/site) Enter your subdomain in the same Custom Domain input field.

Additional Information

  • Your Domain name may take up to 48 hours to propagate. While typically much faster, it is possible that your site will suffer downtime while propagation is happening.
  • In order to integrate Facebook with your SocialEngine Community while using a custom domain, you will need to create a custom facebook app.
  • If you are having trouble with a failed configuration of a custom domain name, you can always access your admin panel by going to YOURURL.onsocialengine.com/admin. This will allow you to access your admin panel regardless of the state of your custom domain.
  • If you continue to have trouble configuring your custom domain, please open a support ticket from your client dashboard.
