Creating Categories

Creating Categories within a SocialEngine Cloud site allows for a greater degree of organization control within the community. This allows users to create sub-divisions of the main feed for specialized interests. These smaller, more specialized groups can form and discuss topics within the broader community. The following article will provide a guide for creating, posting to and deleting categories within a SocialEngine Cloud site. We will also explain how to add a category to your main menu bar.

Creating Categories

The first step is to create a few categories. The following steps will show you how:
  1. Navigate to the site’s admin panel. You can reach the admin panel by typing in Once you have logged into the admin panel, the page should look like the window below:
  2. On the left side, click the “Posts” option:
  3. Click the “Add Category” button in the middle of the page:
  4. This will bring up a blank box in which you can type in the name of your categories. Enter the name of the first category. Click the “Add Category” button again to add a second category:
    Note: Categories will only appear in the main menu bar if two or more categories are created. If only one category is created this option will not show up in the main menu bar.

  5. Once the categories have been created, scroll to the bottom and click the “Save Changes” button:
    Note: The order of the categories in the admin panel will be reflected in the menu on your site’s “Categories” menu. If you want one category to appear higher in the main site, move it up in the admin panel window
  6. Once the categories have been successfully added and saved, a green bar will appear at the top confirming that the changes have been saved. From here, click the name of the site in the top right-hand corner to navigate back to the home page of the community:
  7. The “Categories” option will now appear in the main menu. When clicked you will see both category options as well as the “Everything” Option:

Posting to Categories

Now that categories have been created, users are able to post to and filter by these categories by following the instructions below:
  1. Click the “Post Something” option on the main page:
    Note: The screen may look a bit different depending on which theme is activated. The options will be clearly labeled in any case.
  2. Users will have the option to choose a category or post only to the main feed:
  3. Users can also filter posts by category by selecting the desired category from the main menu. This will only filter out posts made to the selected category:

Deleting Categories

If a category needs to be deleted you can do so by essentially following the previous instructions in reverse. The following is a step by step guide to remove categories. Please keep in mind that all posts are automatically added to your “Hot”, “New”, and “Top Rated” feeds. Deleting a category does not delete the posts. All posts in the deleted category will remain in the main feed.
  1. Navigate to Admin Panel
  2. Click “Posts” Option
  3. Delete the name of the category that will be deleted
  4. Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page.
