Adding Categories to Main Menu

By default, all categories created are collapsed into a single menu option within your main menu. While this is a great system to organize all categories, there is also the option of highlighting a given category by adding it to the main menu bar as a separate option. The following article will walk you through the process of featuring a category in the main menu by creating a new page, adding the category feed widget to the page and then adding that category to the menu.

Steps to Add Categories to Main Menu

  1. Navigate to your admin panel and click the “Page Templates” option on the left-hand side.
  2. Click the link to open the template for the “Hot” page
  3. This will open the HTML template for the “Hot” section of your activity feed. Highlight everything in the “Content” box and copy it to your clipboard (CTRL+C on Windows/CMD+C on Apple systems).

This code will be used as a basis of our new category page, because we want the structure of the hot page retained in our new page.
  4. Navigate back to the main “Page Templates” window and click “Add New Template”
  5. This will create a new page on your site. Give your page a title, a name, and specify what URL you would like the new page to have. Once this is done, paste the previously copied code into the “Content” box (CTRL+V on Windows/CMD+V on Apple systems). This will provide a general framework for your new page. However, you will need to make a couple of slight modifications
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the HTML and locate the line that reads as follows:
    <script type="x-engine/func" data-func="lang" data-key="What's Hot"></script>
Once this line is located, delete the line and replace the text with the name of your category
  7. Next, move two lines down and locate the code that reads as follows:
    <script type="x-engine/func" data-func="feed" data-type="hot" data-pagination="more"></script>
  8. Once this line is located, change data-type="hot" to data-type="new". You will also need to add an extra attribute. After data-pagination="more" add an attribute that says data-category-id=""
  9. The next step is to obtain the Data Category ID number to place between the two quotation marks at the end of this attribute. You can find this number by navigating to the Posts menu in the Settings section. The number will be listed next to the category.
  10. Navigate back to the new page template and enter the Data Category ID number into the quotation marks. Your modified lines will end up looking like this:
  11. Save the new template and navigate back to the main templates page. Scroll all the way down until you see the template with the new name on it:
  12. Once you locate your new template, click the drop down box under “Menu” and select “Main Menu”
  13. Confirm this action by clicking “Save Changes”
  14. Note that your category will now be added to your menu bar!
  15. If you’d like to change the order of your menu bars you can do so by altering the order of the page templates in the admin panel. This is done by dragging and dropping the page template names
