How to Enable Follow and Following-Only Messages

The SocialEngine “Following” feature allows members to “follow”, or subscribe, to other members. When enabled, there will be a special “Follow” menu created on your site so members can see what other members they are following are posting.

In addition to this feature, you can set the site to a more private site by enabling the “Allow Following-Only Messages and Mentions” setting that will make it so that members can only interact with those that are following them.

We’ll give details for both settings below.

Enabling or Disabling Following

  1. In your Admin Control Panel, in the left menu under “Settings” click “Members”.
  2. For the setting, “Enable Following”, set it to “Yes” to enable it by clicking in the checkbox. (Note that to disable it, uncheck the “Yes” checkbox.)
  3. “Save Changes” and then check front end and you will see the Following menu tab is now enabled. (Note that it might look different depending on the theme you use.)

How to Enable Following-Only Messages and Mentions

Note that you’ll need to have enabled the “Following” setting above in order to use this setting. Also, Admins and Moderators are exempt from the “Following” rules and are able to message and mention anyone.

  1. When in your Admin Control Panel, under “Settings”, click “Members” as seen in step one and two above.
  2. Scroll down to the setting, “Allow Following-Only Messages and Mentions” set it to “Yes” to enable it by clicking in the checkbox. (Note that to disable it, uncheck the “Yes” checkbox.) Be sure to “Save Changes”.
  3. Test by having two test members set up so you can see how this works.
