Creating and Adding a Favicon

A favicon is a file containing one or more small icons, most commonly 16×16 pixels, associated with a particular Web site or Web page. Favicons are useful for branding and brand recognition as they appear in the browser tab and in bookmarks. Though very small in size, they can have a great impact on your website.

If you don’t have a favicon yet, you can get one made at any online generator such as this one. The one I linked gives you a choice to generate a standard 16 x 16 or all sizes for mobile and desktop. Our tutorial uses the general 16 x 16 icon.

Tips for Creating the Favicon

  • If using an online generator, you’ll want the image you upload to be at least 260 x 260.
  • You can make your own favicon with programs such as the free GIMP that’s available for any OS. It has an export tool to create ico images.
  • Test your image on your development site before loading it to your live site.

Uploading the Favicon

  1. Once you have your favicon created, you’ll need to load it to your server where you have SocialEngine installed. In most cases, this would be the public_html folder.
  2. You’ll need to either have an FTP program (such as Filezilla) or access to your cpanel (or plesk panel) where you can access your files.
  3. If you are not sure where your SocialEngine files are located on your server, you can check for these folders:
  4. Once you’ve found your SocialEngine installation, load your favicon in the same location as seen here:
  5. Depending on your browser, you should see the favicon with a hard refresh in order to bypass the browser cache.
  6. If you still can’t see the favicon after a hard refresh, log in to your Admin Panel and navigate to Appearance > Theme Editor and click “Save Changes” and then refresh the page again.
Still having trouble with the favicon? No problem! Contact our support to assist with uploading. **Note that you will need to already have a proper favicon created in order for our support to upload it for you.
