Add Meta Tags and Keywords for Better SEO of your Site

What is SEO?

When you search for a keyword or phrase on a search engine, a number of related results are displayed. Websites are listed in a particular order, and generally, the topmost results receive the most traffic. But what determines the display order of search results? The answer is Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO mainly deals with meta tags, a very important part of the HTML of your web page. They are not displayed in the front end of the page; rather, they contain descriptive keywords about the page. Then, when someone searches for that keyword in a search engine, the engine will detect your matching meta tag and pull the other relevant tags from your page, like title and description, into the search results. So, when used properly, meta tags are very powerful in influencing the search ranking and traffic for your site.

There are three types of meta tags that are used in SocialEngine sites:

  1. Title Tag: The title provides a quick (20-50 character) introduction to a web page. Search engines tend to pay close attention to title tags, so your title should contain the most relevant keywords of the web page.
  2. Meta Description Tag: The description tag contains a summary of the content of a page. This tag should be around 140 characters. Try not to go over 160 though, because search engines will truncate the rest of the characters.
  3. Meta Keywords Tag: The keywords tag is essentially a list of keywords that are relevant to the page contents. This type of meta tag has begun to fall out of favor of search engines, and are therefore not as important as the above two tags, but they could still generate some hits.

Search engines read meta tags from left to right, so it’s best to put your most relevant keywords near the start of a title tag. Choosing accurate keywords will give visitors a clear idea about your site and will generate traffic for your site accordingly.

In SocialEngine, meta tags can be used in three sections:

  1. Meta tags for the site: These can be edited from the "Admin" > "Settings" > "General Settings" section. You can put the Site Title, Keywords, and Description from your General Settings, and these will act as meta tags for the site.
  2. Meta tags for content: When any content is created (such as a blog), the title and description of the content also function as meta tags.
  3. Meta tags for pages: We've provided an option to create meta tags for every page on your site. You can add meta information for a page from the "Edit Info" link in the "Admin" > "Layout" > "Layout Editor" section.
